Every year the Office of Undergraduate Research celebrates awardees with the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award, the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award, and presents certificates to scholarship recipients. This event fosters a healthy research culture as one that includes recognition.

The Awards Ceremony is event was made possible by the leadership and support of the University of Utah, Undergraduate Studies, Vice President for Research, and the 18 colleges who partner with the Office of Undergraduate Research.

Price College of Engineering students Ellie Karren and Sam Makin received Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Awards. Haohan Zhang, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, received the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award.

 

Ellie Karren
Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award
Mentor:  Benjamin Ellis, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering

Ellis remarked on the pair of papers the two had in press and described Karren as “a truly outstanding student that trains other students.”

 

Sam Makin
Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award
Mentor: Cynthia Furse, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Furse said of Makin, “Sam is extremely capable and self-motivated. He tries something, asks questions, pays attention to detail and persists through challenges.”

Mechanical Engineering Chair Bruce Gale said, “Most impressively, Dr, Zhang’s mentorship has made a lasting impact on his mentees. Many of his mentees went on to pursue degrees at top graduate programs in mechanical engineering, including our own.
