Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT)

Job Type: Internship

Engineering Area(s): Civil & Environmental Engineering

Academic Level: Graduates / Alumni (B.S. Degree Required), Senior (Graduating Soon), Junior, Sophomore

Job description
The UDOT Civil Engineer Internship Program offers a pre-professional job opportunity for qualified engineering students. This program provides engineering students a quality summer experience and exposes future engineers to UDOT as a potential employer.

Internships are available in a variety of areas but most interns work in our construction area, and will work with professional engineers in the day-to-day operations of a construction crew. As an intern, you will get hands on experience in traffic control, testing, inspecting, and other aspects of Civil Engineering that you cannot learn in a classroom.

This position is located in Region 2 – The Greater Salt Lake Area. We are looking for someone to start soon.

These positions give students an opportunity to learn a trade while helping UDOT fulfill its mission to Preserve Infrastructure, Optimize Mobility, Improve Safety and Strengthen the Economy.

PAST INTERNS HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN…

Testing Materials. Interns assigned to construction crews conduct inspections. Others may run tests in a lab including soils testing, concrete and asphalt testing, materials testing or testing paint retroreflectivity.
Conducting Research and Analysis. Interns are often tapped to perform research and analysis. For example, former UDOT interns have analyzed and evaluated interstate ramps, pavement-marking materials, testing procedures, grading systems, air quality and HOV lane studies. Interns have also taken a hand in researching topics such as, pavement distress, ADA ramps and the feasibility of HOV lanes in the Wasatch Corridor.
The Traffic Operations Center. The Traffic Operations Center employs several summer interns who spend their time learning about signal phasing, ramp metering, traffic modeling, and network manipulation. One intern developed a scaled traffic network simulation model for urban areas throughout the state.
